Effective Management of Downy & Powdery Mildew in Vegetable Crops

A) DOWNY MILDEW :

B) POWDERY MILDEW:

🔸️Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery substance on the surface of leaves, while

🔸️Downy mildew causes yellowish-green spots on the upper leaf surface with a fuzzy, grayish-white growth underneath. Downy mildew thrives in cool, humid conditions, while

🔸️Powdery mildew prefers drier conditions.

A) DOWNY MILDEW:

▪️Appearance : Causes angular, yellowish-green spots on the upper leaf surface, with a downy, grayish-white growth underneath (on the underside of the leaf).

▪️Environment : Favors cool, damp conditions with high humidity and wet leaves.

▪️Causative Organism : Caused by oomycetes, which are fungus-like organisms.

▪️Infection : Can penetrate plant tissues, leading to more severe damage, including browning, defoliation, and plant death.

▪️Spread : Spores are spread by wind and splashing water.

▪️Temperature : Cool temperatures are ideal, generally between 15-23°C (59-73°F).

▪️Humidity : High humidity, above 85%, is crucial for spore production and infection.

▪️Moisture : Free moisture (like rain or dew) on leaves is essential for spore germination and infection.

B) POWDERY MILDEW :

▪️Appearance : Forms a white, powdery coating, typically on the upper surfaces of leaves, but can also be found on stems and other parts.

▪️Environment : Thrives in dry, warm conditions with moderate humidity.

▪️Causative Organism : Caused by various fungi, with many being host-specific.

▪️Infection : Typically remains on the surface of the plant and doesn't penetrate deeply into the tissues.

▪️Spread : Spores are spread by wind and can survive on plant debris.

▪️Temperature : Moderate temperatures, typically 20-30°C (68-86°F), are optimal.

▪️Humidity : High humidity (above 45%) is preferred, but free moisture on leaves isn't necessary for development.

▪️Moisture : Rainfall is not required, and the disease can still thrive in dry conditions, unlike downy mildew.
